Abstract

The current knowledge of the Black Sea species complex of Alburnus Rafinesque, 1820 is insufficient. This resulted in recognition of Alburnus mentoides Kessler, 1859 as a valid species or as a synonym of Alburnus chalcoides (Güldenstädt, 1772) or Alburnus mento (Heckel, 1836). Therefore, the rediscovery of the syntypes of A. mentoides, which were considered to be lost, will be helpful for a future revision of the Alburnus species complex in the Black Sea basin. A lectotype of A. mentoides is designated.
